Any current high-school junior or senior who earns a gold medal on the Medusa Mythology Examination is invited to apply for several Achievement Awards. The application consists of a teacher recommendation, an application form, and a student composistion which addresses an assigned topic related to the subject of this year's exam. This year's topic is: "Describe the punishment for a new tortured soul in Tartarus and the crime that condemned him/her there." The teacher, not the student, must submit all three documents via e-mail by 11:59pm (Eastern Standard Time) on 1 June 2008.

Need the application form and recommendation form?

Students who apply will then receive points, distributed as follows:
  • 70 for the composistion:
    20 for knowledge of myth
    20 for originality and creativity
15 for organization and adequate support of thesis
    15 for writing mechanics
  • 10 for the teacher recommendation
  • 20 for the Medusa score (students who earned 49 points on the Medusa will therefore have a slight advantage over students who earned 47 points)
The top three awards will be in the amount of $750 (the "Minerva"), $550 (the "Apollo"), and $300 (the "Nike"), with up to four honorable mentions of $100 each (the "Musae"). There is a chance that not all prizes will be awarded if too few quality applications are received.

The Achievement Awards will be mailed directly to the winners on or before 1 July 2008. All teachers whose students participated in the Medusa will receive a list of the winners and copies of the top composistions. Names of the recipients, along with the top composistions, will be posted on the Medusa Exam website.

All questions, as well as completed Achievement Award Applications, should be emailed directly to:
