Medusa Mythology Examination 2009

Achievement Awards Program

Any student who earns a gold medal on the Medusa Mythology Examination is invited to apply for several Achievement Awards.

The application consists of:         teacher recommendation

                                                application form

                                                student composition

This year's topic is:  For one of the heroes from this year’s theme (Jason, Theseus, Odysseus, or Aeneas), retell an episode from his adventures from the point of view of one of the women involved.

The teacher, not the student, must submit all three documents via email by 11:59 pm on June 1, 2009.

Students who apply will then receive points, distributed as follows:

70 points for composition:       20 for knowledge of myth

                                                20 for originality and creativity

15 for organization and cohesion in narrative

                                                15 for writing mechanics

10 for the teacher recommendation

20 for the Medusa score (students who earned 49 points on the Medusa will therefore have a slight advantage over students who earned 47 points)

The top three awards will be in the amount of $750 (the "Minerva"),  $550 (the "Apollo"), and $300 (the "Nike"), with up to four honorable mentions of $100 each (the "Musae"). There is a chance that not all prizes will be awarded if too few quality applications are received.

The awards will be mailed directly to the winners on or before July 1, 2009. All teachers whose students participated in the Achievement Awards compositions will receive a list of the winners and copies of the top compositions. Names of the recipients, along with top compositions will be posted on the Medusa Exam website.

All questions, as well as completed Achievement Award Applications, should be e-mailed directly to:
