The Medusa Mythology Exam Committee is proud to announce its sponsorship of the twelfth annual Medusa Mythology Examination, an international competition for mythology enthusiasts. The exam is available to all students (regardless of enrollment in a Latin/Greek course) in grades 6-12. The exam provides students talented in mythology an opportunity to excel and be recognized and aims to increase students’ exposure to mythology. The Medusa Mythology Exam is composed of 50 multiple choice questions centered on a mythological theme, which for 2008 is: “A Plague on Both Your Houses!” (The Houses of Atreus and Cadmus). Questions will focus on the stories and genealogy of the mythological royal families of Mycenae and Thebes and will cover characters and events from every generation of these two famously unfortunate families.
Sources include (but are not limited to) the ancient works of Aeschylus, Sophocles, Homer and Ovid and modern works such as Tripp’s The Meridian Handbook of Classical Mythology and Morford & Lenardon’s Classical Mythology.
Top achievers on the exam will receive certificates or medals imported from Italy. Our highest-scoring participants in the 11th or 12th grades can apply for several achievement award scholarships.
The Medusa Mythology Exam has been approved by the Contests & Activities Committee of the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
Fees for the Medusa are $3.00 per student plus a $15 registration fee ($25 for schools outside the U.S.). Financial aid may be available as necessary. The exam, which is 40-minutes, will be administered during the week of March 24 - 28, 2008 (choose either March 17-21 or March 31-April 4 in the case of spring break conflicts) and all scores and awards will be returned to the school after they are received and processed.
Registrations will be accepted through 16 February 2008. Interested parties are encouraged to download their registration materials and check the website for information and announcements.
